What a suspension means
Google distinguishes between profiles and accounts. A profile can be suspended or disabled. A removed profile is not visible to the public, and owners and managers cannot act on it. An account can be restricted: all locations that user owns are then removed, and the user cannot create or claim other profiles.
If only a manager's account is suspended, the locations themselves are not affected, only that manager's access. So first read Google's email and check the status: is it the profile, your account or a manager's account?

Common triggers for a suspension
Google often names only the policy that was broken. In practice, these are the usual causes:
| Trigger | Example | What to fix |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords in the business name | “Smith Plumbing Emergency 24h London” instead of “Smith Plumbing Ltd” | Use the name exactly as on your sign, letterhead and registration |
| Ineligible address | Virtual office, coworking desk without staffed space, PO box | A real address where you meet customers, or hide the address |
| Service-area business showing a home address | A tradesperson working from home displays their residential address | Hide the address and set a service area |
| Duplicate profiles | One profile per service or per staff member at the same location | Remove duplicates or have them merged |
| Many changes at once | New name, new address and new category on the same day | Make changes one at a time, with evidence ready |
| Suspicious reviews or account activity | Bought reviews, rewards for reviews, logins from many countries | No incentivised reviews; give access through manager roles instead of shared passwords |

What not to do
- Do not create a new profile. Google states clearly that a duplicate profile for the same business can complicate or jeopardise your appeal.
- Do not appeal in a hurry. Each appeal can only be submitted once. Fix the cause and collect your documents first.
- Do not claim other profiles while your account is restricted. It is not allowed during that time.
- Do not pay anyone who guarantees reinstatement. Nobody outside Google can lift a suspension.

Evidence to prepare
Google lists documents like these as proof. What matters is that the business name and address on every document match the profile exactly.
| Evidence | Examples |
|---|---|
| Official business registration | Company registration certificate, sole trader registration |
| Business licence | Permits and licences required for your trade |
| Tax certificates | Letters from the tax authority showing the business name and address |
| Utility bills | Electricity, water, phone or internet bill in the business name at the profile address |
| Useful extras | Photos of your exterior sign and entrance with the street number, the lease for the premises |

How to file the appeal
- 01
Check your account
If your Google Account is restricted, lift that restriction first through the My accounts page. Only then can you appeal the profile.
- 02
Open the appeals tool
Open the Google Business Profile appeals tool and confirm which account you are signed in with; switch if needed.
- 03
Choose the profile and the decision
Select the affected profile, then the decision you want to appeal. The tool shows its date, the reason, the linked policy, whether it can be appealed and its status.
- 04
Upload evidence and explain
Upload your documents and explain in the text box, factually, why the profile meets the guidelines and what you corrected.
- 05
Submit and wait
Confirm and select Submit appeal. Google reviews it and emails you the decision. Google does not give a fixed review time.
- 06
If it is rejected
With new, stronger evidence an additional review is possible in some cases. Sending the same appeal again does not help.

How to word the explanation
Keep the explanation short, factual and verifiable. No complaints about Google, no marketing for your business, no guesses about competitors. The reviewer wants to know three things: does the business exist at this address, can it serve customers there, and does the profile now meet the guidelines?
An example: “Smith Plumbing Ltd has been registered at the listed address since 2015 and receives customers there during the listed opening hours. We changed the profile name to match our company registration and removed the additions ‘Emergency 24h London’. Attached are our certificate of incorporation, a utility bill in the company name at this address and a photo of our exterior sign.” Adapt the names, dates and documents to your own case.

Ten or more locations affected?
For ten or more suspended profiles, the appeals tool asks whether this is a bulk request. Answer yes and attach a spreadsheet listing each Business Profile ID, plus your supporting documents. The tool only updates the status of the profile you selected.

What the suspension means for your visibility
While the profile is suspended, you are missing from Google Maps and the local map results in Search. Your website can still appear in the regular results; it is not directly affected by the profile suspension. This is when a website that is well set up for local search terms pays off.
If the website does not show up either, that is a separate problem. Our guide on why a website is not showing on Google helps you narrow it down. For the basics of local visibility, read SEO for small businesses.

How to avoid the next suspension
- Keep the business name exactly as registered and on your sign, without added locations or services.
- Only show an address where you actually receive customers; otherwise set a service area.
- Change name, address and category one at a time and keep evidence to hand.
- Invite staff and agencies as managers instead of sharing login details.
- Collect reviews honestly: asking for feedback is fine, rewards and bought reviews are not.
FAQ
Common questions
01Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?
Usually because of a suspected guideline violation: keywords in the business name, an ineligible address such as a virtual office, duplicate profiles, or unusual changes and reviews. The appeals tool shows the reason and the policy for each decision.
02How long does a Google Business Profile appeal take?
Google does not give a fixed timeframe. The decision arrives by email. A complete explanation with matching evidence avoids back-and-forth.
03Should I just create a new profile?
No. Google warns that a new profile for the same business can complicate or jeopardise your appeal.
04What documents does Google accept?
Google lists examples such as official business registration, business licences, tax certificates and utility bills. The name and address must match the profile exactly.
05How many times can I appeal?
Each appeal can only be submitted once. After a rejection, an additional review with new evidence is possible in some cases.
06Why was my profile suspended after changing the address?
An address change triggers a fresh check of whether the business is eligible at the new location. Make sure the new address is a real, staffed location (or hidden for service-area businesses) and have documents with the new address ready for the appeal.
